Since 1993, the Jamgon Kongtrul Labrang has sponsored and organised eye camps for sight restoration aimed at treating the poor and needy suffering from cataracts.
In carrying on the wish of the Third Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche, Outreach Micro-surgical Clinics are conducted in India and Nepal in technical collaboration with the Tilganga Eye Centre, a community-based eye hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal, under the guidance of its Medical Director, the esteemed Dr. Sanduk Ruit.

In February 2004, Paramita Charitable Trust conducted an 8-days Outreach Micro-surgical Clinic in Kalimpong at the Jamgon Kongtrul Eye Centre site to announce the opening of its community-based eye hospital in Kalimpong set-up in technical collaboration with the Tilganga Eye Centre of Kathmandu, Nepal. The Eye Centre is expected to open its services by the summer of 2004.
The Jamgon Kongtrul Eye Centre in Kalimpong will provide outpatient and surgical treatments as well as outreach activities to screen patients in remote areas for preventable and treatable blindness problems. It strives to eradicate preventable and treatable blindness in the district and surrounding areas through high-quality ophthalmic care and education on world-class level. Like all the social projects of Jamgon Kongtrul Labrang, the Jamgon Kongtrul Eye Centre also aims to make free treatments available to poor and needy patients.

Vision - A Critical Factor in the Lives of the Poor
Vision is a critical sense faculty for survival among the poor especially those living in harsh physical terrains and engaged in menial daily work. It is very common for blindness due to cataracts to affect many of them at a fairly early age. In the Upper Himalayas, this is often due to lack of visual protection from the strong rays of the sun. In the plains, wherever sanitation and hygiene are lacking, ailments, especially those affecting the body fluids, may also contribute to eye disease. And, of course, poor nutrition and chemical pollution also aggravates the condition.
The impact of visual impairment and blindness on the lives of the poor is severe. It is evident through the personal histories of cataract patients that many have been reduced to impoverishment and destitution. Families also suffer disintegration particularly in cases where the victim is a mother of growing children.
Clearly, the Outreach Micro-surgical Clinics for treatment of curable blindness achieve much more than just restoring vision.
