A day clinic that opened in December 1995, the Healthcare centre was established according to the wish of the Third Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche. While visiting Lava, Rinpoche discovered that the distance from existing health care facilities and ignorance about prevention and treatment resulted in many villagers suffering needlessly, and some dying, from curable diseases.
Located in the outskirts of the remote village of Lava, West Bengal, India, at an altitude of 7,700 feet, the clinic is still the only health care facility for more than 10,000 villagers within a radius of 25 kilometres.
In addition to providing primary health care, the clinic serves as a link with the diagnostic and treatment facilities located in Kalimpong (an hr. away by car) and Siliguri (3 hrs. away by car).
Examination at the Health Care Centre
The clinic has a resident nurse. A doctor trained in western medicine and a pharmacist visit weekly. The doctor and the nurse are both familiar with the local customs and problems, and they have the trust of the community. Additionally, the doctor has excellent working relationships with other health care professionals in Kalimpong and Siliguri.
To accommodate the poverty of most patients, the fee charged is a token sum of Rs.10. Medications are sold at cost, with those donated to the Clinic given free of charge.
The cases noted in 2003 showed that the common ailments suffered by patients were those related to blood pressure, the skin, gastro-intestinal problems, lungs and respiratory problems, and skeletal-muscular problems. Much of the health problems were connected to the conditions, occupation, diet and lifestyle of the people.
