"Throughout the ages, practitioners of the Dharma have engaged in meditation and study, both of which are necessary to attain the ultimate fulfilment of enlightenment. Like all other religious paths, Buddhism aims to help us find true peace and happiness. Many who search for real happiness cannot find it in material gain or ownership. Real, unchanging, peace and happiness exist within ourselves and can only be realised through subtle intellectual enquiry and meditation. To provide this opportunity for people today, I have decided to build a place for study and meditation…."

Introduction
The Third Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche named the place for study and meditation the Rigpe Dorje Institute, in supreme memory of the Sixteenth Gyalwa Karmapa, Rigpe Dorje, his root teacher, in whom Rinpoche had perfect faith and devotion.
Rinpoche began plans for the Institute in the mid-1980s and intended to locate it at Sarnath, India. However, just before he dissolved his mind in parinirvana in 1992, Rinpoche relocated the site of the project to Pullahari in Nepal.
He wanted the Institute to be a place where sincere practitioners could engage in study and practice without having to worry about their basic needs and health. Rinpoche also envisioned a range of programmes and activities to preserve and propagate the Buddhadharma, and to help solve contemporary problems through the application of Buddhist philosophy.

On the 16th of November 1992, the sacred body relic of the Third Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche was brought from Rumtek Monastery to Pullahari Monastery. On that auspicious occasion, the Very Venerable Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche began a series of annual teachings at Pullahari Monastery. The annual teachings eventually became the Rigpe Dorje Programme that the Third Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche had envisioned.
In 1995, the Jamgon Kongtrul Labrang built facilities for classrooms and for the accommodation of students. The first Rigpe Dorje residential programme was held in the winter of 1996. However, the Institute building itself was delayed due to the lack of funds.
In 1999, an offer from the Chodron Foundation of USA to fund the construction of the Institute's building enabled the fulfilment of the heart-wish of the Third Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche.
The construction of the Institute building began in 1999 and is expected to be fully completed by the end of 2004. Pictures of the building in progress can be viewed on this website: Click Here!

Programmes of Teachings and Retreat
Located in the sacred and peaceful surroundings of Pullahari Monastery, the Rigpe Dorje Institute is a place where students and practitioners can pursue organised programmes, or personal studies, and retreats.
Facilities for the accommodation of students are open throughout the year. Visiting residents may practice and meditate in the Stupa Temple, attend the prayers and pujas at the Monastery, and use the library. Appointments with teachers and lamas in residence can be arranged through the general office.
Notices and information about forthcoming programmes, the facilities for retreat, and travel to Nepal are available on this website.
