 The 4th Dolpo Shel-Ri Rinpoche
Tsakhang Gompa
Shey, Upper Dolpo, Nepal
Tsakhang Gompa is the seat of the Dolpo Shel-ri Rinpoches at Shey, Upper Dolpo, Nepal, more than 16,000 feet above sea level.
A disciple of the Second Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche, the previous Third Dolpo Shel-ri Rinpoche spent many years in solitary retreat at Tsakhang Gompa. Out of devotion to his root teacher, Dolpo Shel-ri Rinpoche offered Tsakhang Gompa to the Third Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche when he visited Rumtek Monastery in 1982.
The Third Dolpo Shel-ri Rinpoche dissolved his mind in parinirvana in December 1990, where after, the Third Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche assumed responsibility for Tsakhang Gompa, and made arrangements for the training and education of the future incarnation, the Fourth Dolpo Shel-ri Rinpoche, at Pullahari Monastery. The Jamgon Kongtrul Labrang has carried on the responsibility for Tsakhang Gompa following the parinirvana of the Third Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche in 1992.
The Fourth Dolpo Shel-ri Rinpoche
In accordance with the Third Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche's wish, his General Secretary, Tenzin Dorjee, requested His Holiness the Seventeenth Gyalwa Karmapa, Urgyen Trinley Dorje, for a prophesy concerning the reincarnation of the Third Dolpo Shel-ri Rinpoche.
Based on His Holiness Gyalwa Karmapa's prophecy, the Fourth Dolpo Shel-ri Rinpoche was found in 1998. He was born in Bije, Upper Dolpo, and was seven years old at the time of his recognition. The following year, he was brought to Pullahari Monastery by the Jamgon Kongtrul Labrang.
Today, the Venerable Fourth Dolpo Shel-ri Rinpoche lives and studies with His Eminence the Fourth Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche.
 Tsakhang Gompa in Dolpo
Aspiration
The Jamgon Kongtrul Labrang accepts needy children from the families of Dolpo. The girls, and some of the boys who are too young to become monks, are sent to attend the Jamgon Kongtrul IIIrd Memorial School in Kalimpong. The Labrang's aspiration is that some of the monks will eventually return to Dolpo to join the sangha in the monasteries in Shey, and some of the lay children will return to help improve the quality of life in their communities.
